How to Set Up a Card Mandate for Automatic Renewals (Indian Cards)
If you pay for your Chat To Clients CRM agency subscription with a card issued in India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) requires a card mandate on it before your plan can renew automatically. A mandate is a one-time permission you give your bank to allow recurring payments to Chat To Clients CRM.
This article explains what a mandate is, how to set it up, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Who needs to do this?
You need to set up a card mandate if all of these are true:
- Your agency’s default payment method is a card issued in India, and
- You see a “Confirm your card mandate” banner on your billing page.
If you use a card issued outside India, you don’t need a mandate and won’t see this banner. Your plan renews automatically.
Before you start
- Keep your phone nearby. Your bank will usually send an OTP or ask you to approve the request in its app.
- Make sure the card you want to use is saved as your default payment method.
- It takes about a minute. You won’t be charged for setting up the mandate.
How to set up your card mandate
Step 1: Open your billing page
- Log in to Chat To Clients CRM and switch to Agency View.
- Go to Settings → Billing.
- At the top of your plan details, find the “Confirm your card mandate” banner, marked Action needed.
Step 2: Start the confirmation
- Click Confirm mandate on the banner.
- A window opens showing your saved card (brand, last 4 digits and expiry date).
- Check that this is the card you want to use for renewals.
Step 3: Confirm and verify with your bank
- Click Confirm & finish setup.
- Your bank’s verification screen appears. Complete the check by entering the OTP or approving the request in your banking app.
- You’ll then see “Setting up your mandate” while your bank creates it. This can take a few seconds. Please don’t close the window during this step.
Step 4: Done
When the bank confirms the mandate, you’ll see “You’re all set”. Your plan, renewal amount and next renewal date are shown there.
Click Continue to go back to your billing page. The banner won’t appear again.
What you’ll see after confirming
You’ll see one of three screens after you confirm.
[1]“You’re all set”
Your bank created the mandate and automatic renewals are on. You don’t need to do anything else.
If your plan is above ₹15,000, this screen also tells you that your bank will ask you to approve each renewal. See Plans above ₹15,000.
[2] “We couldn’t set up the mandate on this card”
Your card was verified, but your bank did not create a mandate for it. This usually happens when the bank doesn’t support recurring mandates on that card.
- You were not charged, and your plan is still active.
- Trying the same card again won’t help. You have two options:
- Use a different card: add a card from another bank. Cards from large banks usually support mandates.
- I’ll pay manually: keep this card and pay yourself on each renewal date. See Paying manually.
[3] “We couldn’t confirm your mandate”
The verification didn’t finish. This can happen if the bank window was closed, the OTP expired, or your bank declined the request.
- You were not charged.
- Click Try again to retry with the same card, or Use a different card to switch.
Using a different card
You can switch cards from any of these places:
- the “We couldn’t set up the mandate on this card” screen
- the “We couldn’t confirm your mandate” screen
- the “No mandate on this card” banner on your billing page
To switch:
- Click Use a different card.
- Enter your new card details and complete the bank verification.
- After the card is saved, you’re taken back to the confirmation step with the new card already selected.
- Click Confirm & finish setup and follow Step 3 again.
The new card becomes your default payment method for future renewals.
Paying manually
If you chose I’ll pay manually, or your bank doesn’t support mandates:
- Your billing page shows a “No mandate on this card” banner, marked Manual renewal.
- Your plan won’t renew automatically on this card. Open Settings → Billing on each renewal date and pay there to keep your plan active.
- You can set up a mandate later by clicking Use a different card on the banner.
Important: If you don’t pay on the renewal date, your subscription payment may fail. Setting a calendar reminder helps.
Plans above ₹15,000: approving each renewal
Under RBI rules, a mandate can only debit your card automatically for amounts up to ₹15,000. If your renewal is above that (including tax), your bank will:
- Send you a pre-debit notification (SMS, email or banking app) shortly before each renewal.
- Ask you to approve the payment.
You must approve this notification each time. If you don’t, the renewal payment will fail, even though your mandate is set up.
Chat To Clients CRM tells you about this twice: in the confirmation window before you start, and again on the “You’re all set” screen.
FAQs
Will I be charged when I set up the mandate?
No. Setting up a mandate only verifies your card with your bank. No money is taken. You’re charged only on your regular renewal date.
Why do I need to do this?
RBI rules for recurring card payments in India require a mandate before a business can charge your card automatically. Without one, your bank will decline automatic renewal payments.
I don’t see the “Confirm your card mandate” banner. What should I do?
Nothing. The banner appears only when your default card is issued in India and a mandate is still pending. If you think you should see it, check that your Indian card is set as your default payment method under Settings → Billing, then refresh the page.
How much is the mandate for?
The mandate is set to a maximum amount that covers your plan price plus applicable taxes (18% GST). Your bank never lets more than that amount be debited. You’re only charged your actual renewal amount.
My bank said the mandate couldn’t be created. Is my plan cancelled?
No, your plan stays active. Either add a card that supports mandates, or pay manually on each renewal date.
Which cards support mandates? Most credit and debit cards from major Indian banks support recurring mandates. Some cards, including certain debit and prepaid cards, may not. If yours doesn’t, try a card from a different bank.
I closed the window while it said “Setting up your mandate”. What now?
No problem. You weren’t charged. Go back to Settings → Billing and click Confirm mandate on the banner again. If your card was already verified, we pick up where you left off.
Can I try the same card again?
- If you saw “We couldn’t confirm your mandate”, yes. Click Try again.
- If you saw “We couldn’t set up the mandate on this card”, retrying the same card won’t work because your bank declined the mandate. Use a different card or pay manually.
My mandate is set up but my renewal still failed. Why?
If your plan is above ₹15,000, your bank needs you to approve a pre-debit notification before each renewal. Check your SMS, email or banking app for a pending approval. If there wasn’t one, contact your bank to confirm the mandate is active.
Can I change the card on my mandate later?
Yes. Add a new card as your default payment method under Settings → Billing. If your bank needs a new mandate for that card, the Confirm your card mandate banner appears again. Follow the same steps.
Can I cancel the mandate?
Yes. You can cancel a mandate at any time through your bank, usually from its app or netbanking under “Standing instructions” or “e-mandates”. If you do, your renewals won’t be charged automatically, and you’ll need to pay manually or set up a new mandate.
I use a card issued outside India. Do I need to do anything?
No. Mandates are only needed for cards issued in India. Your plan renews automatically as usual.
Is my card information safe?
Yes. Card details are handled by our secure payment partner and verified directly by your bank. Chat To Clients CRM never stores your full card number.
